Sudden ban: passengers got angry and returned tickets - autumn surprise from Russian Railways

The autumn tourist season is in full swing in Russia, and those planning to travel by rail should familiarise themselves with the rules introduced last autumn and coming into force in 2024. These changes affect all passengers and may come as a surprise to many. • The use of lower containers by passengers with upper berth tickets is now strictly regulated. The lower berth is only permitted during the following hours: 7:00–10:00 (breakfast), 12:00–15:00 (lunch), 19:00–21:00 (dinner). • It is prohibited to listen to music or use other audio devices at high volumes that may cause discomfort to others. Musical lessons and rehearsals are also prohibited on trains. • It is recommended to purchase tickets 90 days before the train’s departure date to avoid problems with seat availability. • The carriage of animals is permitted only with the necessary documentation and special containers. • Alcohol consumption is only permitted in restaurant cars and bars. • Many of Russian Railways’ new rules are aimed at improving passenger comfort. For example, a ban on loud noises from devices could help create a calmer atmosphere on trains. • As rail travel becomes increasingly popular, Russian Railways needs to continually adjust its rules to improve service quality and meet passenger needs.
