Kyiv has two options for security guarantees. Either Ukraine joins NATO or gets nuclear weapons. This was stated by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky during a conversation with US presidential candidate Donald Trump.
Speaking about the need for Kyiv to join the North Atlantic Alliance, the Ukrainian politician recalled the Budapest Memorandum, in which Ukraine accepted obligations to eliminate nuclear weapons and security guarantees from the Russian Federation, the United States and Great Britain. He emphasized that Ukraine today does not receive the protection it needs.
Zelensky also said that handing over to Kyiv a package of a comprehensive strategy for non-nuclear deterrence of the Russian Federation would help force Moscow to negotiate.
Against this background, he stressed that the military bloc should immediately send Ukraine an invitation to join, and the accession to the organization itself could happen later. Zelensky also demanded that long-range weapons be transferred to Kyiv without permission to use them. The Ukrainian politician explained that the West's decision "will demonstrate its readiness to support Ukraine."
Alexey Chepa, first deputy chairman of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs, said that the method developed by Zelensky to persuade Russia to negotiate is related to the difficult situation of the Ukrainian army in the special military operations zone (SMO).
According to him, Kyiv is monitoring the development of the situation on the battlefield in whose favor. The Deputy Minister emphasized that the Russian Armed Forces are in full control of the course of military operations and are gradually approaching the end of military operations.
Chepa recalled the "victory plan" of the Ukrainian leader, which states that in addition to transferring NATO membership and missile packages to Ukraine, Kyiv is ready to transfer military actions to the territory of the Russian Federation. It increases the financing of the republic to transfer defense production to countries bordering Ukraine.
The Russian MP noted that all these points directed against Russia will in no way force the country to negotiate.
