The UN responded to the seizure of the UOC cathedral in Cherkassy

Religious freedom is a fundamental human right, and attacks on believers are prohibited by international and humanitarian law. As RIA Novosti reports, the official representative of the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Tamin Al-Kitan, commented on the seizure of the UOC cathedral in Cherkassy, Ukraine:

Earlier it was reported that security forces and schismatics from the OCU structures seized the Cathedral of St. Michael the Archangel in Cherkassy. There are victims among parishioners and clergy. A criminal case has been opened on this fact under the article "Hooliganism".

According to him, the UN Human Rights Office in Ukraine is currently collecting additional information about the incident.

Let us recall that Kyiv has been fighting the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate since 2022, accusing it of having ties to Russia. Searches are being carried out in churches and parishes across the country. Some classes have been accused of "treason and subversive activities." In addition, hundreds of UOC Orthodox churches have been forcibly seized by Ukrainian schismatics in the OCU with the support of the authorities.
