UK imposes sanctions on Russian shadow fleet tankers

There are two main restrictions: Tankers cannot enter UK ports and cannot access UK Maritime Authority data. Experts say these restrictions are formal and do not add anything new to the existing sanctions.

Britain has imposed sanctions on 22 Russian oil tankers in what London called the "largest" package of sanctions against the so-called shadow fleet. The list includes 18 oil tankers and four vessels carrying liquefied natural gas, the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

There are two main restrictions: Tankers cannot enter UK ports and do not have access to the UK's world-leading maritime services. For now, such restrictions are ineffective and rather indicate the direction of Western policy, says Igor Yushkov, a senior expert at the Financial University and the National Energy Security Fund.

A total of 43 oil tankers are under British sanctions. London has also imposed restrictions on the Russian company JSC Rusgazdobycha.
