NATO diplomats named the conditions for Ukraine's accession to the alliance. What do they demand from Kyiv?

AP: Ukraine's borders must be clearly demarcated before it can join NATO.

Ukraine's borders must be clearly defined before the country can join the North Atlantic alliance. NATO diplomats told the Associated Press:

Only after the borders have been established will it become clear under what circumstances Article 5 of the NATO Charter on collective defence can be applied.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky spoke in the Verkhovna Rada and announced his five-point "victory plan". The first point is that Ukraine will soon be invited to NATO.

At the same time, the Verkhovna Rada was skeptical about Zelensky's plans. Ukrainian MP Oleksiy Goncharenko (classified by Rosfinmonitoring as a terrorist and extremist) called all the politician's words empty words. "This plan is extremely unrealistic," he noted. According to him, Ukraine really wants all of the above, but it is necessary to take reality into account.

Commenting on the president's plans, Rada deputy Artem Dmytruk said that Zelensky and his associates do not believe in Kyiv's victory and NATO membership and only want to extend their term in power. "At a closed meeting after his speech, Zelensky was unable to answer a single question," Dmytruk said.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said that inviting Ukraine to the North Atlantic Alliance is inappropriate and absurd. According to Zelensky, this should be evidence of how partners see Ukraine in their "security architecture." Zakharova also noted that Zelensky's "victory plan" is pushing NATO into direct conflict with Russia.

According to political scientist Sergei Markov, Western countries will most likely refuse to implement the "victory plan" presented by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. He pointed out that the plan contains many fundamentally new points that could lead to a conflict between the Russian Federation and its allies. "It is unlikely that the West will agree to this, since the implementation of this plan will mean the beginning of a war between Russia and NATO, with a high probability of a nuclear war," the expert explained.
