Novosibirsk told what is prohibited to do on Yerofeyev Day
On the same day, the Kazan Cathedral of Saints is celebrated and the celebration of 27 famous saints of God takes place, in which the saints Gury, Archbishop of Kazan, and Barsanuphius, Bishop of Tver, stand out.
People call this day Yerofeyev Day, associating it with the onset of cold weather and the approach of winter. According to tradition, on this day people tried to avoid communicating with strangers and spend time at home, alternating work and rest. Entry into the forest was prohibited, and those who entered were advised to leave bread and salt in the stumps for the forest spirits.
On this day, they tried not to hold weddings, as a warning of possible future quarrels. The weather was also closely monitored. A red evening dawn foreshadowed a strong wind, and the first snow promised the beginning of winter in 40 days.
