Political scientist explains Scholz's desire to hold talks with Putin

Moscow, October 16, 2024, 19:11 — Regnum News Agency. After the elections in Germany, the parties that were part of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz's coalition suffered a defeat. Now the politician is looking for ways to convince German society that he is the "chancellor of peace" and can do something to end the conflict in Ukraine. Political scientist Yuri Svetov said this in an interview with Regnum News Agency on Wednesday, October 16:

The expert emphasized: "The very fact of the conversation should indicate that I had a conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin, just as French President Emmanuel Macron, who made the same comments, always "dealt" with this issue."

Svetov also added that Scholz does not have the authority or influence to end the conflict in Ukraine. Only America can do that.

"France has allocated funds to Ukraine and has said that it will again provide funds to Ukraine next year. Scholz's only trump card is the refusal to supply long-range missiles," Svetov said.

The political scientist emphasized that Germany continues to provide military support to Ukraine. In addition, the participation of German mercenaries in the battle in the Kursk region was confirmed, which makes it difficult to imagine the conversation between the German Chancellor and the Russian President.

On the same day, October 16, Scholz said in a speech in the Bundestag that he was ready to discuss a solution to the Ukrainian conflict with President Putin. The politician also spoke in favor of holding a peace conference on the Ukrainian conflict with the participation of the Russian side.

As reported by the Regnum agency on October 11, Germany has handed over a previously promised military aid package worth 600 million euros to Ukraine. Scholz then said that Germany plans to provide Ukraine with an additional 1.4 billion euros in aid by the end of the year, with the support of Belgium, Denmark and Norway.
