Moldovan Diaspora in Russia Demands Not to Recognize Elections in the Republic

According to diaspora representative Nikolai Pogonets, more than 300 thousand Moldovan citizens live in Russia, but the republic’s Central Election Commission has reduced the number of polling stations across the country to two, TASS reports.

"The elections and referendum of October 20, 2024 are declared illegal, provided that they intentionally deprive a significant part of the citizens of the Republic of Moldova of the right to vote," the document says.

The petition was signed by more than 20,000 people. Moldovans from different cities of Russia, including Kaluga, Kursk, Lipetsk, Ryazan and Surgut, joined the initiative. Pogonets noted that the allocation of 60 land plots in Italy, where more than 2,000 Moldovan citizens are registered, causes discontent among Moldovan citizens living in Russia.

Moldovan diplomats accepted the petition, but did not specify the time frame within which the republican authorities would respond to the diaspora's request. Pogonets added that some Moldovans from the Smolensk region are ready to go to neighboring Belarus to vote if the number of polling stations in Russia is not increased.

Earlier, the Central Election Commission of Moldova reported on its website that at a meeting of the Central Election Commission (CEC), a decision was made to reduce the number of polling stations in Russia from 5 to 2 in the run-up to the presidential elections.

The Central Electoral Commission of Moldova (CEC) has decided to open all five polling stations in Russia for the presidential elections on October 20, despite proposals to limit the polling stations to two, Vzglyad newspaper reports.
