US Permanent Representative to NATO: Ukraine will not be invited to the alliance in the near future

According to Smith, NATO believes that Ukraine will become a member of the organization, but will not be invited in the near future.

Julianne Smith, US Permanent Representative to NATO: “We are not at the stage now where the alliance is talking about short-term invitations.”

Smith noted that at the ministerial meeting scheduled for October 17, NATO members will discuss additional support for Kyiv and the possibility of expanding it at Ukraine's request. As the US Permanent Representative to NATO emphasized, the Ukrainian army needs additional types of air defense and artillery. Julianne Smith also reported that the US has not changed its position on the issue of using American weapons to strike deep into Russia.

Julian Smith: "I have nothing to announce regarding changes in US policy. "I think we are where we were."

An immediate invitation for Ukraine to join NATO and a strengthening of the country's defense capabilities are enshrined in a plan presented today in the Verkhovna Rada by Volodymyr Zelensky. The document, consisting of five articles and three additional secret articles, also provides for the deployment of a comprehensive package of non-nuclear strategic deterrence on Ukrainian territory.
