"On Two Chairs": Political Scientist on Kazakhstan's Reluctance to Join BRICS
Kazakhstan decided not to join BRICS due to external pressure, political scientist Yuri Svetov is convinced. In an interview with NEWS.ru, the expert emphasized that Kazakhstan President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev is trying to sit on more chairs than two. According to him, serious pressure was exerted on the head of state.
The political scientist noted that international companies have long controlled oil and gas production in Kazakhstan. According to him, the Kazakh elite "has money in London." The expert added that the decision to join BRICS is reminiscent of the situation when the construction of the Kazakh nuclear power plant was entrusted to an international consortium.
Deputy Alexey Chepa previously expressed confidence that Kazakhstan would change its decision in the future and join BRICS. According to him, this is a private matter for the state. The legislator emphasized that many countries are currently interested in the organization.
