Average payment of debtors in St. Petersburg and Leningrad Oblast has increased by a third since the beginning of the year

The average amount paid by debtors in St. Petersburg and the Leningrad Region to repay overdue bank loans transferred under transfer agreements increased by 33.4% at the end of the third quarter compared to the data from the beginning of the year. Overdue debt exceeded 7,000 rubles, according to data from the collection and return service for identity cards:

At the same time, the average amount of debt in the bank’s portfolio allocated for nine months of the current year decreased by 4% over the year (September 2024 to September 2023).

In his opinion, there are several reasons for this phenomenon. Firstly, consumers, including overdue borrowers, are not inclined to overspend. For example, according to the Central Bank, the growth rate of household funds in Russian banks in August 2024 compared to July accelerated from 1.1% to 1.3%, to 0.7 trillion rubles, which is not typical for the last month of summer. Holidays and preparing children for school are on the rise. This is due to attractive interest rates on deposits and the general mood of citizens towards savings behavior, which is also reflected in the spending of available funds to repay debt.

Secondly, free funds appear against the background of increasing income. Thus, according to Petrostat, the nominal unpaid wages in St. Petersburg and the Leningrad Region amounted to 105.7 thousand rubles and 80.6 thousand rubles, respectively, which is 15% and 22% higher than similar indicators in July 2022. The average payment on overdue loans in St. Petersburg increased to 7,000 rubles.

ID Collect analysts note that debt to the bank under assignment agreements is subject to external collection not immediately, but 2-3 years after the last payment on the loan. Thus, retail bank loans, which are currently processed by professional collectors, were issued in 2021-2022. And earlier. Against the backdrop of the then pandemic and the economic crisis of 2022, lenders reduced lending limits for most retail credit products, so a decrease in average debt amounts is not surprising, the service notes.

In September, it became clear that this could be a record year in terms of the growth dynamics of overdue debt of individual entrepreneurs. For the whole of 2023, the amount of debt increased by 1.7 times, and for 2024 - by 1.8 times and for the first time exceeded 1.8 billion rubles.
