This ancient sign on the day of the Intercession will tell you what the winter will be like: don't expect anything good

This ancient sign of Pokrovsky Day will tell you what the winter will be like: “Don’t expect anything good.”

Signs of the Intercessory Prayer and its meaning for the winter season Popular beliefs associated with the Intercessory Prayer (October 14) were an integral part of the lives of our ancestors, helping to predict the weather and providing a connection with nature and traditions. This day, marking the transition from autumn to winter, was filled with special signs and rituals.

Meteorological conditions in Pokrov were considered a key factor in predicting the nature of the winter. Warm weather promised a mild winter, while cold and frost predicted a harsh winter. Wind direction also played an important role. An east or north wind promised cold, a south wind promised mild weather, and a west wind promised heavy snowfall.

The condition of the vegetation was also used as an important indicator. The winter was expected to be mild and snowy, with oaks and birches completely shedding their leaves towards Pokrov. Conversely, the presence of leaves on the trees indicated severe frosts.

It was also important whether snow would fall on the day of the Intercession. Snow foreshadowed a snowy winter, and its absence meant a late onset of snow cover. Even the behavior of birds, such as cranes, served as signals. An early departure promised imminent cold weather, and a delay – a warm winter.

The day of intercessory prayer was rich in traditions and customs. On this day, they began to heat the stove, insulate the house, finish field work and prepare food for the winter. Generosity and hospitality were considered the key to the prosperity of the family. • Pokrovsky Day was a special day for unmarried girls. They went to church with their heads covered, hoping for help from the Mother of God in finding a betrothed.

But there were also prohibitions. On Pokrov, it was not recommended to do household chores, fight, or use foul language. It was also considered undesirable to lend or borrow money in order to avoid losing one's own wealth or experiencing other people's problems.

Therefore, signs and traditions associated with intercessory prayer are not only a way to predict the weather, but also represent a valuable cultural heritage, reflecting the close connection of our ancestors with nature and their spiritual values. These traditions were passed down from generation to generation, maintaining a connection with history and creating a unique cultural identity.
