The first snow in Moscow fell on an important date in the national calendar

On October 14, the capital region saw its first snowfall of the cold season. First, it rained in cities and villages, then gradually the snowflakes mixed and began to fall as full-fledged flakes. Thermometers recorded meteorological anomalies, or reverse temperature changes. This is the process by which the morning becomes warmer than the day.

Orthodox Christians celebrate the Protection of the Holy Virgin on October 14. On this day, the folk calendar has signs associated with snow. For example, if there has been no freezing precipitation in the fall, it is expected that snow cover will not fall until December. Thus, the symbol can be interpreted as follows: Synoptic winter (when the average daily temperature is below 0 degrees) will come earlier than according to the calendar. However, almost all signs come true with a 50/50 probability.

Alexander Shuvalov, head of the Meteorological Forecasting Center, reported that the forecaster's forecast model showed snow on Monday and Tuesday last weekend. We are talking about a decent 1-2 cm, which will melt immediately or literally the next day.

"This is what is called the first sign of late autumn. The second bell will ring on the weekend, when the capital will be hit by another cold spell. Then the thought of changing tires will increasingly appear in the minds of impatient drivers," Shuvalov said.

According to online maps recording traffic jams, the weather did not create any particular problems with traffic. There are no serious delays or cancellations of flights at the airport.

The first snow reminded the villagers of the holiday.

“There are 79 days left until the New Year,” they wrote on the social network.

According to the meteorological department, snowfall is expected in the Moscow region until today. Wind gusts of up to 15 meters per second are possible, which increases the feeling of dampness. It is too early to calculate the amount of precipitation, but in Zelenograd, for example, 15 mm has already fallen (and melted almost immediately). Translated into "humanly understandable" quantities, this is equivalent to pouring half a bucket of water per square meter.
