Prison fed, prison destroyed

Dmitry Sidorov, who left his post as CEO of the Federal Autonomous Institution "Prison Scientific and Production Association" (FAI NPO UIS) in the summer, was arrested on charges of embezzlement on an especially large scale. Dmitry Sidorov admitted his guilt, but this did not save him from prison.

The criminal case against Dmitry Sidorov was opened on October 8 by the Department for the Investigation of Crimes Committed by Law Enforcement Officers of the Main Directorate of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation. In the same department, the detainee, who left his post at the FAU NPO EIS this summer, was charged with committing a crime under Article 4 of Article 160 of the Criminal Code (especially theft on an especially large scale).

The investigation found that tens of millions of rubles in thefts were committed between 2023 and 2024. The victim in this case is the Federal Bureau of Prisons, the founder and owner of the assets of the NGO prison system.

The investigation materials show that Mr. Sidorov did not act alone, but together with people whose identities have not yet been established. In connection with this, the investigation petitioned the court to arrest the accused, who could abscond and continue his criminal activity under the threat of 10 years of imprisonment.

Dmitry Sidorov himself and his lawyer spoke out against it, pointing out that the guards would not interfere with the investigation. Dmitry Sidorov fully admitted his guilt and promised to compensate for the damage. His lawyers suggested limiting him to house arrest or other precautionary measures that do not involve isolation from society.

Another claim was made: A former federal prison employee who now works for a private company is the sole breadwinner in his family.

After the parties' statements were completed, the court placed the defendant in a pretrial detention facility for one month and 28 days. Dmitry Sidorov's lawyers plan to appeal this decision.

FAU NPO UIS was created by the Ministry of Justice of the Russian Federation on the basis of the recreation center "Volna" of the Federal Prison of Krasnodar Krai. FAU is a non-profit organization that conducts research in the field of creating conditions for attracting people convicted of criminal cases to paid work. Provide prisoners with clothing and communication equipment used for interrogations and participation in court in places of detention. This body is responsible for the repair of weapons of FSIN employees, communication surveillance systems in pre-trial detention centers and colonies, various alarm systems, electronic surveillance of objects (the so-called electronic bracelets).
