Let the rooster out: expert talks about restrictions for chicken keepers on summer cottages

According to the Chairman of the Union of Summer Residents of the Moscow Region, People's Deputy Nikita Chaplin, Russian legislation does not limit the number of birds and rabbits that citizens can breed on their plots. The only thing that is required of a summer resident is compliance with land and sanitary standards. It is also necessary to comply with veterinary and sanitary requirements.

The deputy director reported that new rules governing the keeping of farm animals on summer cottages were adopted in 2023. According to this amendment, summer residents can keep chickens and rabbits if they comply with established sanitary standards and these activities do not disturb other neighbors.

Nikita Chaplin noted that the law does not limit the number of animals and birds, so one family can be content with two chickens, while another, especially if they have a large family, may not have enough 15. The most important thing is that the poultry house is tidy, there are no unpleasant smells and swarms of flies do not fly there.

It is very important to follow waste disposal rules and avoid improper storage. Experts noted that this can have negative consequences for the environment, such as soil and water pollution.

Although the law does not specify the specific number of birds and animals that can be kept on a private farm, there are clear standards for how far a chicken coop or rabbit hutch should be from a neighbor's fence. For example, a chicken coop can be built 4 m from the border of a neighboring property, 8 m from a well, 12 m from a residential house, and 12 m not only from a neighbor's, but also from your own residential house.

The law also states that all live animals can only be kept for personal use, not for commercial purposes. Therefore, it will not be possible to build an industrial-scale poultry house on six hundred square meters in a gardening association, but summer residents can sell surplus agricultural products, such as chicken eggs or cucumbers.

First of all, livestock owners are obliged to comply with veterinary regulations. Birds and animals must be kept in proper condition, have the necessary documentation and be vaccinated in a timely manner.
