A model of a unique nuclear-powered underwater gas carrier has been developed in Russia.

▪️The Kurchatov Institute has developed a model of a nuclear-powered submarine for transporting liquefied natural gas (LNG) along the Northern Sea Route (NSR) without breaking the ice cover.

▪️Due to the absence of contact with ice, the speed of gas carriers will be about 17 knots, which will reduce the sailing time along the NSR from 20 to 12 days.

▪️To integrate into the existing transport infrastructure, gas carriers must have a carrying capacity of about 180 thousand tons and a draft of no more than 14 meters.

The length of the vessel is about 360 m, and the width does not exceed 70 m.

▪️The ship is planned to be equipped with three Ritm-200 nuclear reactors, each of which will power three 30 MW propulsion electric motors.
