Learning to Live Without Mom and Dad: The Story of 8-Year-Old Varya, Who Miraculously Survived a Horrible Car Accident
A young couple, Andrey and Darya, died in a terrible accident in Nakhodka at the end of January 2024. At a speed of almost 140 km/h, the driver of a Toyota Mark II flew into the oncoming lane and collided with a Toyota Belta. The car flipped three times in the air. The impact was so strong that the sedan's engine was torn apart. The daughter of the victims, 8-year-old Varya, miraculously survived.
She suffered serious fractures to her arms, legs and chest. The girl had to undergo several surgeries and literally learn to live without her mom and dad all over again.
The culprit of the accident, Dmitry Tkachenko, was arrested in absentia because he was hospitalized after the accident. After being discharged, he was transferred to a pretrial detention center. The trial began, but the case was postponed. The next trial was scheduled for September 16 and 17, when a verdict would likely be issued. It was postponed because the criminal's father had died the day before. A new court hearing was scheduled for October.
