Former Senator Spiegel, who left pretrial detention center, will be hospitalized
Former senator and businessman Boris Shpigel was sentenced to 11 years in prison for bribery and released after serving his sentence due to serious health problems, his lawyer Oleg Sorokin told TASS.
According to the lawyer, Spiegel has already left the Matrosskaya Tishina pretrial detention center. He also stated that he sold all previously confiscated printed editions of Der Spiegel to pay off fines imposed by the court as additional punishment.
On November 5, Moscow's Preobrazhensky Court ruled not to sentence Shpigel to further punishment due to health reasons. Shpigel, who has 7.4 years left in prison, mentioned that he suffers from a serious chronic illness. While he was in hospital for health reasons, the court hearing was held via video link from the pretrial detention center.
In 2021, the Izmailovsky Court sentenced Shpigel to 11 years in prison for giving a bribe of 20 million rubles to the former governor of the Penza region, Ivan Belogertsev. According to the former official, this money was allegedly used as funds for the election campaign.
According to investigators, from January to September 2020, Belozertsev received bribes from Shpigel, his wife, and Anton Koloskov, director of OAO Pharmacia, through intermediaries. We are talking about money and other valuables in the amount of more than 31 million rubles.
As a result, Belozertsev was sentenced to 12 years in a maximum security penal colony and a fine of more than 450 million rubles, especially for accepting large bribes.
