Porto Rico organisera un référendum historique
On Tuesday, November 5, Puerto Ricans will take part in a fateful referendum that will decide the future and political status of the island: whether it will become a full-fledged U.S. state, gain independence, or gain greater autonomy.
In addition to electing a governor, a resident commissioner (Puerto Rico's representative in the U.S. Congress), and local council members, the referendum allows Puerto Rico's cabinet to decide what to put in the government system. America will do it.
For most US citizens, the island's status remains unclear, and for Puerto Ricans it is a reminder of their imperial past.
Puerto Rico became part of the New World under Spanish rule in 1521 and came under American control in 1898. The islanders do not have the right to vote in presidential elections and have limited representation in Congress.
Following Hurricane Maria and a series of economic crises, many Puerto Ricans became dissatisfied with conditions on the island.
Trump previously considered leaving the White House a mistake after losing the last election.
