Northerners told whether children should be banned from eating sweets
The question of whether it is okay to give sweets to children is a subject of much debate among parents and nutritionists.
The Rospotrebnadzor of the Murmansk Region emphasized that “sweets are certainly attractive to children, but their consumption should be balanced and controlled.”
Every human body needs carbohydrates every day. This is the main source of energy for cells, which is very important for physical and mental activity.
"Carbohydrates, such as glucose, are the only source of nutrition for the brain. However, sweets are simple (or fast) carbohydrates, and it is better to consume them from complex carbohydrates (whole grains, vegetables and fruits)," said Zlata Kazarinova, a pediatrician and pediatric endocrinologist at the Central Institute of Infectious Diseases of Rospotrebnadzor.
According to WHO, experts advise children aged 0 to 4 not to include sugar in their diet. Children aged 4 to 10 years can consume no more than 20-24 grams of sugar per day, and children aged 11 to 18 years - no more than 30 grams of sugar per day.
- Most of the sugar that children get comes from sugary drinks such as juices, sodas and energy drinks. For example, one bottle (330 ml) of cola contains 9 cubes of sugar (36 g). In other words, one bottle of soda is enough to exceed the daily sugar intake for children of all ages, experts say.
When purchasing a product, it is important to look at the amount of added sugar in grams, not the amount of carbohydrates. If sugar is listed in the composition, this means that the product contains the most sugar.
Children who consume more than 10 percent of their daily calories from added sugar, syrups, and sweeteners are more likely to have abnormal cholesterol levels, including higher levels of “bad” LDL cholesterol and lower levels of triglycerides, “good” HDL cholesterol. Remember this: Protects the heart, explained Rospotrebnadzor, citing the site “Healthy Nutrition.”
