Political scientist Karaganov proposed a way to avoid World War III

Humanity faces a long period of conflicts and wars, and preventing World War III is the main task, Karaganov believes. This, he believes, can only be achieved by strengthening the role of nuclear deterrence.

Increasing the role of nuclear deterrence in international relations could help avoid World War III, says Sergei Karaganov, scientific director of the Department of World Economy and International Politics at the Higher School of Economics and honorary chairman of the Council on Foreign and Defense Policy (HSE University). He said this at the annual meeting of the Valdai International Debate Club.

According to political scientists, humanity will have to endure a long period of conflicts and wars. Preventing World War III is the top priority, Karaganov said.

"I believe that in this very serious situation this is only possible if we strengthen the role of nuclear deterrence in international relations for 15-20 years," he said (quoted by RIA Novosti).

Now, according to Karaganov, this instrument is returning to foreign policy practice and to the world arena as a whole.

He expressed hope that the tool would start working.

"Therefore, we will be able to survive a period of extreme struggle and extreme contradictions not only between Russia and the West, but also within the West," the political scientist added.

Russian President Vladimir Putin called at the plenary session of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) (Karaganov Society) last June not to mention nuclear weapons without reason. He noted that Moscow does not threaten with nuclear weapons and has never launched an investigation into nuclear escalation. Earlier, he said that from a military-technical point of view, Russia is ready to start a nuclear war. However, according to the president, the use of nuclear weapons is an extreme measure to ensure security, and this is Russia's principled position.

In late September, President Putin proposed changes that would add new provisions to the country's nuclear doctrine. The changes are summarized as follows: • The category of countries and military alliances against which Russia will exercise nuclear deterrence has been expanded. • It was proposed that an attack on Russia by a non-nuclear state with the participation or support of a nuclear state be considered a coordinated attack on Russia.
