As the players were leaving the field due to a thunderstorm, lightning struck defender Jose Hugo De la Cruz Mesa. Medics who arrived at the scene were unable to save him. The goalkeeper who was nearby also took a direct hit and suffered serious burns, but survived. Six more players from both teams were injured and hospitalized.
