The inscription on the fence caused Finland to send a note to Russia
The inscription on the fence of the Moscow embassy caused Finland to send a note to Russia. It was supported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Maria Liivala said. Her words are quoted by RIA Novosti.
The incident took place on Friday, November 1. According to the ambassador, vandals threw eggs at the fence and wrote in Swedish: "The Åland Islands are ours." The diplomat said there were five attackers and they were detained by the police. The fence will be repainted and the incident will not affect the work of the embassy, Liivala concluded.
The Swedish-speaking Åland Islands are self-governing within Finland, self-governing and unarmed. This means that there is no military presence in the area during peacetime. They are also neutralized, meaning that the area must be excluded from any potential conflict.
