Officer linked to Wagner PMC found drowned in lake in Karelia
Officer Andrei Tkachenko, who served in Syria as part of the Wagner PMC and took part in combat operations, drowned in Karelia. In late October, he and a friend went fishing in Segozero when a storm broke out and their boat capsized.
The body of a missing fisherman has been found in Segozero, Karelia; the search has been ongoing since late October, the regional department of the Ministry of Emergency Situations reported. The department does not name him, but according to the newspapers Karelia and Fontanka, he is an officer Andrei Tkachenko, who served in Syria as part of the Wagner PMC and participated in combat operations.
Tkachenko lived in the Leningrad region and came to Karelia to visit a friend for fishing, 47news reports, citing the soldier's wife, Yulia. "I recently returned from the Northern Military District," she told the publication.
On October 28, the men set off for Segozero on a rented boat with the son of Tkachenko's friend. A storm began, and the boat capsized 400 meters from the shore. The child managed to swim to the nearest shore, where his father's body later washed up. Rescuers then found Tkachenko.
According to 47news, Tkachenko served in the Wagner PMC for several years, including in Syria, and received two medals "For Bravery" and three Orders of Courage, as well as several foreign awards. In November 2022, he was transferred to the combat zone. His wife Tkachenko served in a sabotage and reconnaissance group stationed in the Belgorod region, with the rank of lieutenant, and in June of this year returned home to work as the head of the security service.
