Байден поздравил Санду с переизбранием и обвинил РФ в попытках помешать выборам
US President Joe Biden congratulated Maia Sandu on her re-election as President of Moldova, RIA Novosti reports, citing a statement by the US leader released by the White House.
Moldovans re-elected Sandu two weeks after they voted in a referendum to support a constitutional amendment that would have affected the country's bid to join the European Union, Biden said.
The US President also noted that "Russia's attempts to undermine Moldova's democratic institutions and electoral processes have failed." Biden added that he supports the Moldovan people's decision to choose a democratic path for the country's development that is oriented toward Europe.
On November 4, the Central Electoral Commission (CEC) of Moldova recognized Sandu as the winner of the second presidential election after processing 100% of the votes. According to the CEC, she received 55.33% of the votes, while the candidate from the opposition Socialist Party, Alexandru Stoianoglo, received 44.67%. The Socialist Party of Moldova refused to recognize the results of the vote at foreign polling stations and declared Sandu an illegitimate president. According to the socialists, the work is “recognized only by foreign patrons and curators,” and “the people of Moldova feel deceived and robbed.”
