Moscow was "rammed" by a diving cyclone: snowdrifts grew by 10 cm in 24 hours
On November 4, Moscow and the entire Russian Plain were covered by an Atlantic cyclone. At the same time, the temperature in this region dropped and a lot of snow fell. From 5 to 8 mm of snow fell in the capital. This data is recorded at various meteorological stations in the capital and the region. Translated into centimeters, the height of the snow cover is 5-8 cm.
Alexander Shuvalov, head of the Meteorological Forecasting Center, said the cyclone that has engulfed central Russia is what meteorologists call a "dive." It involves sudden weather changes that occur over a fairly large area.
— The diving cyclone, which hit the Russian plain from Narva to Saratov in just one day on November 4, is pushing the snow-covered southern border 700–800 km to the south. By the morning of November 5, snow will fall on the Narva-Smolensk-Bryansk line, as well as in the south of the Voronezh region. However, the Atlantic cyclone will sharply change its direction of movement and begin to rise far to the north, said Alexander Shuvalov.
Experts predict that frost will leave Moscow on November 7. And the snowdrifts that are already there will melt.
"We can assume that this will not be the last invasion of the snowdrift." Forecasters predicted that in early December they would advance and retreat repeatedly over the course of just 10 days, and finally encounter winter in the central region.
In Moscow, city services have been on high alert since the evening of November 3.
Utility workers promise to clear the roads during the rain. It also initiates the defrosting process, which is important given the unstable minus.
The capital's headquarters of the Ministry of Emergency Situations warned that wet snow is expected to accumulate on trees and power lines in Moscow by 15:00. Therefore, both drivers and pedestrians should avoid any types of structures and spreading crowns that may accumulate due to heavy snowfall.
On the morning of November 4, there were no significant delays in arrivals or departures at Moscow's Airhub airport. Automobile transport is also free.
