Spain flood death toll rises to 214
The death toll in Spain from flooding caused by heavy rain has risen to 214, with 211 deaths recorded last week. Three more bodies were found in Pedralba, Valencia.
According to EFE, citing local authorities, "one or two people" are believed to be missing in Pedralba. The search for the bodies of the dead is ongoing. El Mundo reported that 67 bodies have been identified so far.
The day before, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez ordered an additional 10,000 soldiers and police to be sent to Valencia to help repair flood damage. The total number of people in the affected areas rose to almost 15,000. It is the largest peacetime deployment of military and police forces in Spanish history.
Torrential rains and floods hit eastern and southern Spain on October 29. In just a few hours, more than 300 liters of rain per square meter fell in Valencia. Rescuers are clearing roads of mud to provide humanitarian aid.
