A Harvest of Scientific Importance: Early Feijoa and Citrus Varieties Are Being Harvested in Sochi
Scientists from the Center for Subtropical Sciences of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Sochi have begun harvesting early-ripening varieties of feijoa and citrus fruits. I photographed the process.

As reported earlier, his citrus collection has more than 150 varieties. This includes varieties of many species, as well as wild and semi-wild relatives of citrus, used as propagation material and rootstock. The most widely represented groups are tangerines and lemons. In total, there are more than 50 species of each. Based on this collection, breeding work is carried out aimed at winter hardiness, early maturity and dwarfism. Agricultural technologies are also being improved.
Let us recall that the record citrus harvest in November 2023 in the experimental zone of the Center for Subtropical Sciences of the Russian Academy of Sciences amounted to about 160 cents per hectare. This is significantly more than in 2022.
