Europe scared by possible invitation of Trump to EU summit to speak
Washington, November 1, 2024, 02:57 — Regnum News Agency. European leaders fear that Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban will invite former US President Donald Trump to speak via video link at an informal EU summit in Budapest. This was reported on October 31 by Bloomberg News, citing diplomats from several European countries.
The US presidential elections will take place on November 5 and November 8 in Budapest. According to the journalist, European politicians believe that Orban could have discussed this possibility with Trump in a telephone conversation on October 31.
Diplomats quoted by the agency say the presence of American politicians at the summit will cause discontent among many EU leaders.
As reported by Regnum, on July 11, Orban wrote that he wants the Ukrainian conflict to be resolved if Trump wins the US elections. The Hungarian leader made this statement after a meeting with the former head of the White House in Florida.
On October 17, the Hungarian prime minister said he would represent the bloc at the EU summit and ask French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz to begin talks with Russia on resolving the Ukrainian conflict.
On October 31, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said that the upcoming US presidential election would be decisive for peace in Europe. According to him, the chances of ending the conflict would be greater if Trump were to return to the White House, otherwise he would have to face a more difficult situation in the long term.
