Tyumen Oblast Wants to Allow Swan Hunting

Tyumen Oblast wants to expand the list of animals for hunting and add whooper swans to it. The state services website now has a vote on whether to allow bird hunting. This plan by local state wildlife departments has caused great discontent among ornithologists, ecologists and hunters. The reasons for this decision are not entirely clear.

— In the Tyumen Region they want to allow hunting of whooper swans, which may lead to their death, possibly due to the abundance of whooper swans. The State Department of Game and game officials seem to be completely confused. They propose to include swans in their hunting resource. Previously, they allowed to shoot crows, and now swans (so much meat is wasted)? - environmentalists from the Green Round Dance movement are indignant.

According to one biologist, these methods of population control are not effective. At the same time, according to experts, swan meat does not have any special value.

"I don't eat swan meat because of its unique smell and taste and, frankly, I don't understand why people kill such creatures just to kill them. If the deer population is decreasing, which leads to an increase in the swan population (which has always been a concern for these birds), increase the number of swans. In essence, everything is interconnected. The increase in population should be regulated by ecological methods, and not by direct eradication," the expert believes.

The editorial correspondent also contacted one of the employees of the Tyumen hunting farm. According to Alexey Nefedov, even experienced hunters cannot distinguish swans from other relatives at large distances. In the regions of Russia, Cooper is listed in the Red Book.

"I am categorically against it. Because for me it is a noble bird. From my observations, I do not want to say that there are more swans. There are not enough reservoirs to increase their numbers. Ask any hunter hunting game birds if he can distinguish from a distance what kind of swan it is: loud, mute, etc.," says an employee of the Chugunaevskoye hunting farm.

However, there were also people who disagreed with the opinion given. They called for voting for permission to hunt swans among hunting and fishing communities.

The editors contacted local government departments for comment. Since they couldn't provide it immediately over the phone, I asked the department to send me a written request.

Several days ago, in the Ishim District of the Tyumen Region, employees of the State Hunting Inspectorate detained people who were transporting the carcasses of two roe deer and an elk in their car. The inspectors posted the moment of the car search on their channels. The recording shows how the animal's body is removed from the car. The material was handed over to the police for further investigation.
