Israel confirms killing of Hamas leader Sinwar
He added that Sinwar had to answer for the "murders and atrocities" committed by terrorists during the attack on Israel on October 7, 2023.
The death of Yahya Sinwar was confirmed by the Israeli military. In an official statement, the Israeli military said: "On October 16, 2024, soldiers from the IDF Southern Command killed Yahya Sinwar, the leader of the Hamas terrorist organization, during an operation in the southern Gaza Strip." The IDF emphasized that Sinwar "planned and carried out the October 7 massacre, spread his murderous ideology before and during the war, and is responsible for the murders and kidnappings of numerous Israelis."
This morning, the Israeli military said it was investigating reports of Sinwar's death. The IDF said the Hamas leader may have been killed in an attack on a building in the Gaza Strip. Israeli media later reported that the Hamas leader's body had been identified by photographs of his teeth.
Yahya Sinwar became the head of Hamas in August. Sinwar replaced Ismail Haniyeh. He died in Tehran in late July.
