Unexpected circumstances of the liquidation of the head of Hamas have become known

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) soldiers who killed Yahya Sinwar, the leader of the radical Palestinian movement Hamas, did not expect to meet him, the New York Times (NYT) reported, citing Israeli officials.

The unexpected situation of the liquidation of the Hamas leader became known to the publication on the evening of October 17. It is reported that a group of IDF soldiers encountered Palestinian militants while patrolling the southern part of the Gaza Strip.

Israeli forces identified Sinwar only after a shootout and attack on a building housing Hamas militants. The Hamas leader was killed along with two other militants and there was no sign of hostages nearby, the newspaper's sources said. Money and weapons were also found.

Earlier, the IDF released drone footage showing Sinwar's final moments. The Hamas leader attempted to ward off the drone with a stick-like object.
