Russians with iPhones Will Again Be Able to Pay for Purchases with Their Phones — How the New System Will Work

iPhone owners will once again be able to use their devices to pay for purchases. The National Payment Card System (operator of the Mir card and fast payment systems) spoke about the new technology that makes this possible at the Finopolis forum.

"This is a prototype of the solution that we have developed. It was presented for the first time literally yesterday. The solution is implemented using Bluetooth Low Energy technology," said Dmitry Dubynin, CEO of NSPK.

Previously, all iPhone owners paid in stores using Apple Pay. However, after the introduction of sanctions, this system stopped working in the Russian Federation. The same thing happened with Google Pay, which is used by Android owners. However, other services quickly appeared, such as Mir Pay. Now everyone will have this opportunity.

The truth is that smartphone payment technology will never work the same way. Bluetooth is required instead of NFC. The payment will be processed even if there is no internet connection.

NFC (Near Field Communication) is a short-range wireless data transfer technology. It allows data to be exchanged between devices at a distance of approximately 10 cm, and can also be used for contactless payments, connecting other devices such as headphones, or for personal identification.

The NSPK stated: “Unlike NFC, with the help of ‘Sick’ you can pay from a slightly greater distance from the terminal, without worrying about the location of your smartphone.”

According to Dubinin, about 20 banks have already expressed interest in Volna. After testing, financial institutions will receive the technology, which they will be able to implement in their mobile applications. However, as stated in RBC, other payment terminals will be required to implement the new payment system.
