A small town with a rich history - the birthplace of the famous Mikhailovsky lace
The project won the All-Russian competition for the best small town project of 2022. Support from the federal budget made it possible to continue the work on improving the city center, which began in 2020 as part of the “Creating a Healthy Urban Environment” program.
The project was developed by architects of the Ryazan Regional Department of Architecture. The source of inspiration for this project was the famous Mikhailovskoye lace. Small architectural forms and landscape elements were developed on this basis. In preparation for the competition, 77% of residents voted for local improvement. The estimated cost of improvement work was more than 106 million rubles.
Mikhaylov is a small town with a rich history and traditions. At the first stage of the project development, the architects studied the city territory and social networks, communicated with local experts and held design sessions with young people and townspeople. The city residents noted the following problems:
Lenin Square and Marshal Golikov Street are located in the center and are easily accessible for pedestrians. Large celebrations and city holidays are held here. The improvement project involves the creation of a pedestrian route from the bus stop to the Bantle Bridge with a canopy, an entertainment area, an amphitheater and secluded areas. An important stage of the work is the transfer of parking from the square to the old market. In front of the Lenin monument there is a large open space. The main square is paved with intricate "lace" in the style of Mikhailovsky lace. The square is surrounded on both sides by small squares and a playground and is closed by a bright and elegant gazebo.

In addition to the projects for the improvement of the city center, a project regulation for the care of building facades has been developed. Experts are confident that this will help not only to maintain the order of advertising banners and signs, but also to revive the historical appearance of the building.
The developers noted that the key mission of the project is to create a visible, convenient and safe public space. The implementation of the project for the improvement of the Mikhailov center will increase pedestrian traffic, give an additional impetus to the development of business and the economy and will become a new stage in the development of the city. In addition to the projects for the improvement of the city center, a project regulation for the care of the facades of buildings has been developed. Experts are confident that this will help restore the historical appearance of the building, as well as maintain the order of advertising banners and signs.
"It is nice to see how our public spaces are changing. The city of Mikhailov is one of the leaders in our region. Firstly, the public space is constantly and systematically developing here, and secondly, and this is the most important thing, there are prospects for the coming years. The work will not stop and will continue according to the general plan of the city. I believe that the work of Mikhailov is organized at a very high level. I urge other municipalities to adopt the approach that exists here," said the governor of the Ryazan region Pavel Malkov.
