Unauthorized solid municipal waste dumps are disappearing in Tyumen Oblast, regional operator calculates

Tyumen, October 17, FederalPress. The number of unauthorized garbage dumps is decreasing in the Tyumen Region, the operator of the solid household waste (SHW) handling zone reported. Additional information is available on the FederalPress website.

Since 2019, the number of unauthorized dumps has decreased in the Tyumen region. The data was provided by the local operator of the Tyumen Environmental Association. They calculated that every year less and less garbage will accumulate in unauthorized places.

In 2019, 25 landfills were discovered and destroyed, compared to 18 in 2020 and 2021, 15 in 2022, and only 7 in 2023. Three landfills have been discovered in the Tyumen Region this year.

The registry attributes this trend to positive changes after the start of the waste reform in 2019, namely the revision of the organization of the municipal waste management system and the elimination of landfills. This was also influenced by the fact that residents and authorities began to pay more attention to environmental issues.

Illegal dumping is determined as follows: The registrar receives information about problem areas based on the results of self-monitoring, residents' requests and messages on social networks. Then the site is examined and the necessary research is carried out. Finally, measures are taken to eliminate the dumps. Landowners are identified, they are required to clear the land, the information is transferred to the bodies and departments responsible for state environmental supervision.
