Medvedev resolves dispute over naming new regions of Russia
Moscow, October 16, 2024, 20:38 — IA Regnum. Donbass and Novorossiya can be called new and historical regions, but most importantly, they are Russian. This statement was made by the chairman of United Russia, deputy chairman of the Security Council of the Russian Federation Dmitry Medvedev at a meeting with the heads of the party's regional executive committees on October 16.
He commented on the request to call Donbass and Novorossiya historical territories. The politician noted that this name is also inaccurate.
"All the conditions are absent. Moscow is also a historical territory. So call it what you want. The most important thing is that it is our territory," Medvedev said.
As reported by the Regnum agency, on October 11, Crimean leader Sergei Aksyonov called for a gradual abandonment of the term "new region" in relation to the Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics, as did the Kherson and Zaporizhia regions. He recalled that this territory was part of the Russian Empire and the Soviet Union.
The LPR, DPR, Zaporizhia and Kherson regions became part of the Russian Federation after a referendum in which the overwhelming majority of residents voted for unification with Russia. On October 5, 2022, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a federal law on the admission of new territories to the country and the creation of new entities.
