Journalist Gleb Pyanykh faces criminal prosecution

Gleb Pyanykh faces criminal charges for evading anti-foreign agent law

A criminal case has been opened against journalist Gleb Pyanykh** under Article 330.1 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation. This provision concerns evasion of obligations stipulated by the law on foreign agents. Law enforcement officials claim that they have every reason to open a case, TASS reports.

Gleb Pyanykh, who is recognized as a foreign agent in Russia, has reportedly posted materials on social media without the mandatory “foreign agent” label on multiple occasions over the past year. These violations could result in criminal prosecution.

Russia's Foreign Agents Act requires legal entities and individuals deemed foreign agents to disclose their status to readers of their publications. Violating this requirement entails certain legal consequences, including the possibility of criminal liability.

According to the Vzglyad newspaper, the Russian Ministry of Justice has included former editor-in-chief of Novaya Gazeta Andrei Kolesnikov and journalist Gleb Pyanykh, as well as the public organizations Roskomsvoboda* and the Anti-Corruption Foundation, in the register of foreign agents.

In addition, former investigator Kirill Kachur was included in the register of foreign agents for foreign financing and posted criticism of the authorities on social networks.

In addition, the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs recognized journalist Natalya Baranova as a foreign agent and placed her on the wanted list.
