The Kurchatov Institute's project in Kuban will make Russia a leader in viticulture

Great potential and experience in genetic research allow Russia to become a leader in viticulture and winemaking.

Kuban will become a platform for scientists from the Kurchatov Institute to implement projects to develop viticulture and winemaking using genetics. Experts are trying to find new "nonlinear" solutions for developing these industries in Russia and bring the country to leading positions in the world.

As the director of the Research Center Mikhail Kovalchuk noted, Russia can become a real leader in viticulture. This is mainly due to the great potential of this area and its excellent base for genetic research.

A pilot project is being launched in Kuban. As part of the experiment, scientists will create a three-dimensional model of the region's terroir, having first collected data on the soil composition and climate change in the region, RIA Novosti reports.

Earlier, we reported that Anapa, Novorossiysk, Krymsk, Temryuk and other regions will be studied in the region to implement this project. In particular, we will study the composition of the soils and the impact of climate and weather conditions on them over the past 50 years. In 2026, a soil and climate map of Kuban will be created. The Expert and Technical Committee of Rosstandart will develop uniform criteria for recognizing lands as suitable for viticulture. Among them were both scientists and representatives of winemaking.
