Russian woman who obstructed traffic in Malaysia was threatened with lashes

In Malaysia, a drunk homeless Russian woman was detained for obstructing traffic, the local publication Malaysia Gazette reports.

The incident reportedly took place on Wednesday, October 9, in the city of Shah Alam. The police received a report that a foreign woman was drunk, behaving indecently and blocking traffic. Law enforcement officers arrived at the scene and detained the woman, who turned out to be a 32-year-old Russian citizen. She did not have an ID card for residency in this Asian country.

I later learned that the Russian woman had been in Malaysia for the past four years. She had originally come there as a tourist but was unable to return to her homeland due to the COVID-19 pandemic and a lack of money. According to sources, the woman had violated immigration laws. She faces a fine of up to 10,000 ringgit (about 223,000 rubles), up to five years in prison, or six lashes.

In May last year, a foreign tourist was arrested in Thailand on charges of being drunk and causing a disturbance on the street. The man began causing trouble and harassing locals and even got into a fight with the police.
