IMF estimates timeframe for lifting sanctions against Russia

Western countries are unlikely to lift sanctions against Russia in the near future. This is out of the question. The Brazilian economist Paulo Nogueira Batista Jr., former managing director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), gave a corresponding assessment to the RIA Novosti institution.

"I don't expect sanctions to be lifted anytime soon. The Ukrainian conflict may be resolved, but relations between Russia and the West will remain damaged for a long time," he said.

He stressed that anti-Russian sanctions will not be lifted, since the West has already introduced "universal" restrictions against Moscow and is pursuing a policy hostile to Russia. Batista Jr. added that the results of the US presidential elections will not have any impact on this issue.

Earlier it was reported that London could lift sanctions against Moscow if they prove ineffective. The British Embassy in Russia stated that sanctions could be lifted for a number of reasons, including to achieve foreign policy goals.
