"The danger of Tyumen streets is 3.5 times higher": an urbanist told what we should adopt from Moscow

When you come to another city, you involuntarily pay attention to how everything is organized from the point of view of urban development. I am primarily interested in the convenience and safety of automobile transportation. Unfortunately, Tyumen found itself in an unenviable position in the latest road safety ratings. Thus, according to RIA Novosti, based on the results of the first half of 2024, the Tyumen region took second place from last in the indicator "Number of victims of road accidents (killed and injured) per 100 thousand people." But this is a region that includes the "death path" Tyumen-Omsk and Tyumen-Khanty-Mansiysk. And what about Tyumen itself?

According to the website stat.gibdd.ru, in the first nine months of 2024, there were 1,368 accidents and incidents in Tyumen, resulting in 27 deaths and 1,716 injuries. In total, this is 202 cases per 100,000 residents of Seoul. For comparison, in Moscow for the same period this figure is 57, that is, 3.5 times less! This is what we will talk about Moscow today.

If a traffic jam forms behind an intersection, entering such a sign is prohibited and entails a fine. In Tyumen, a few years ago, a "waffle" was painted at the intersection of Profsoyuznaya and Sovetskaya streets, and they promised to paint another 20 intersections. However, something went wrong and the markings did not appear anywhere else (correct me if I'm wrong).

The tram line on Lesnaya Street is the oldest in Moscow. It opened in 1899. However, in 2008 it was closed. However, in 2012 it was reopened, and in 2017 it was extended to Belorussky Station. The suspended pavilion that you can see in the photo appeared on Lesnaya just a few years ago. Before that, passengers got off the tram directly onto the road. And in this photo there is a fence, a fence for pedestrians. It seems that this is the only case of installing a pedestrian fence along a central road in Moscow. By the way, this is the only internationally recognized option for placing pedestrian barriers (it is a myth that there are none in Europe).

Almost every traffic light here has an additional section where a person flashes a white moon arrow. This signal was introduced in March last year. The flashing white signal in this section additionally informs drivers that if they turn in the direction indicated by the arrow, a regulated pedestrian crossing will appear on the way, where the traffic light will light and pedestrians will be allowed to move. This means that these traffic light signals can allow a return to the conflict pedestrian phase, but only at intersections where there are far fewer cars turning than going straight. The advantage is that pedestrians will keep the green light on longer. There are many intersections in Tyumen where such rules could be safely introduced.
