Some Russians' bank cards may stop working properly
By the end of 2024, some Russians may have problems paying for goods or services.
Difficulties may arise for holders of Visa and Mastercard cards, DEITA.RU reports.
The main reason for the failure is that in many Russian banks during this period the validity period of the card chip security certificate expires. As RBC writes, their effectiveness depends on the decisions of the banks themselves.
As experts explain, the issuer's certificate or the chip security certificate may not correspond to the validity period of the card itself and is purchased by the bank for a different period of time. The international payment system extended the validity period of the certificate before leaving Russia.
Domestic banks will now have to decide for themselves whether to use Visa and Mastercard cards for payments. In this regard, some Russians may have problems with deferred transactions, for example, when paying for transport or offline travel, that is, when the POS terminal is not connected to the network.
