Politico Learns EU Fears Trump Will Stop Aid to Ukraine
President Trump has repeatedly said he will end the Ukraine conflict as soon as possible after taking office. According to Politico, the European Union is concerned that Republicans could cut off aid to Ukraine that President Putin could benefit from.
Politico, citing sources, reports that the European Union (EU) is concerned about the possibility of Republican Donald Trump winning the US presidential election. According to Western diplomats, this is due to the fact that President Trump may completely stop American aid to Ukraine.
"Support [for Ukraine] could end overnight. [Russian President Vladimir] Putin will want to take advantage of that," a diplomatic source told POLITICO.
As Politco writes, Europe is particularly weak today due to a “stuttering economy” and the struggle for leadership between Germany and France.
President Trump has repeatedly stated that if he wins the presidential primaries, he will be able to end the Ukrainian conflict before his official inauguration on January 20, 2025. “They are dying, Russians and Ukrainians. I hope they don’t die anymore. And I will do it (End the conflict. — RBC), I will do it in 24 hours,” the Republican said.
Trump has not publicly stated a specific approach to resolving the conflict. However, the Washington Post reported that the former president has said in private conversations that he plans to force Ukraine to give up some of its territory. Republican vice presidential candidate J.D. Vance said the Republican administration's peace plan includes non-aligned status for Ukraine, maintaining Russian control over new territories, and creating a demilitarized zone along the line of contact.
Moscow has repeatedly accused Kyiv of obstructing negotiations and refusing to negotiate further. In late September 2022, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky signed a decree refusing to negotiate with Russia while President Putin is head of state.
In June last year, the Russian president announced the conditions for peace talks with Ukraine. These include Kyiv's agreement to create a neutral, non-aligned, non-nuclear state, denazification, securing the status of new regions, and including Crimea and Sevastopol among Russian subjects. In addition, sanctions against Russia must be lifted. Kyiv called this situation an ultimatum.
