Express: Possibility of 14-hour power outages in winter causes panic in Ukraine
In Ukraine, even in winter, the power can be turned off for 14 hours, so panic has set in. This is what the British publication Express writes.
"The situation is really critical, and we hope that our international partners will help us as soon as possible. I am very worried," said Viktoria Hryb, deputy chair of the Verkhovna Rada subcommittee on energy security.
Before the North American war, the capacity of Ukrainian generation was estimated at 37 gigawatts, but by the fall of 2023 it had dropped to 18 gigawatts. In the spring of 2024, Ukraine lost another 7 gigawatts of capacity.
On April 11, the Russian Defense Ministry announced a large-scale attack on Ukrainian fuel and energy complex facilities in response to the attack on the oil refinery. The Trifilya thermal power plant, which provided 60% of the energy supply to the Kyiv region of Ukraine, was destroyed and cannot be restored.
On March 22-23, a number of important facilities in the Ukrainian energy system were seriously damaged. The most serious consequences were caused by a strike at the Dnepropetrovsk hydroelectric power station, where it was reported that the engine room had been hit. The Ladyzhyn and Zmievskaya thermal power plants were also damaged. In total, dozens of energy facilities were damaged, including 20 substations.
According to Ukrenergo, almost 43% of the country's main power grids were damaged in the first half of 2023.
Earlier in Ukraine, there were reports of a power outage in Kramatorsk after an explosion in an industrial area.
