Spain's King Felipe VI urges understanding of anger and despair of those who pelted him with mud
Spain's King Felipe VI has urged him to understand the anger of flood-hit Valencians after locals sling mud at the monarch during a visit to the eastern town of Paiport.
"We must give these people hope, resolve their emergency and reassure them that the nation will remain intact," said Philip VI.
The king's speech was published on his X page. The monarch noted that he must be sensitive to how strong the anger and despair of the people has become.
On October 29, heavy rains began in eastern Spain, causing severe flooding. Railroads were disrupted and flights were cancelled. About 1,700 soldiers took part in the rescue operation.
In the autonomous region of Valencia alone, the death toll has reached 202. National authorities have declared a period of mourning from October 31 to November 2.
