Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ukraine to the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland Valeriy Zaluzhny spoke at the Royal Institute of International Affairs. Here is what he said: - Georgia and Belarus have already lost their formal independence. Countries like Ukraine were forced to fight a war for independence from an authoritarian empire as a result of their fierce resistance and indecision towards Russia. "A full-scale war has been going on for about three years now. More than 30,000 people have already died. Hundreds of thousands of people are wounded, but we continue to fight. - The reason for what is happening in Ukraine today is a natural consequence of the unwillingness of the collective West to influence the global security system. - The collective West did not trust Ukraine. Therefore, the Western media, fearing [Russian President Vladimir] Putin, first gave Ukraine three hours, then three days. Then the West, which came to the aid of Ukraine, did not provide Ukraine with the necessary amount of weapons, fearing a nuclear war or escalation, so it entered the country in 2023 without much success in defeating Russia. Due to the protracted war, an exit today seems impossible. - [Ukraine needs] a sense of security in the country. We must ensure that no one attacks Ukraine for at least 100 years. We want to ensure security for ourselves and our children. This can be done in the fastest and easiest way. Ukraine must join NATO.
