How to Live with Fall Allergies: Eyes Are Watery, Nose Is Runny - But Not ARVI

Many people believe that allergies are a spring story. And that's true. Spring is when the grass and trees bloom at the same time. But in the fall, some grasses bloom again, and pollen spreads more than in the summer, even if less, says Irina Nikulina, a medical expert on the TV channel and a therapist.

- Autumn allergies are not at all uncommon. And their symptoms are the same as in spring: runny nose, itchy eyes, swelling and other unpleasant symptoms.

In addition, in autumn, immunity decreases due to various acute respiratory viral infections and seasonal air-conditioning diseases. And due to the humidity on fallen leaves and wet tree bark, fungi begin to actively grow. This, of course, does not add to the health of allergy sufferers.

"To reduce allergy symptoms, first of all, it is necessary to reduce the additional intake of histamine and reduce its production in the body," says Irina Nikulina. - Do not forget to take antihistamines and eat right (the immune system, and therefore the body's reaction to allergens, depends on the health of the intestines). The stress hormone cortisol also accelerates the immune response to allergens. Therefore, do not be nervous, avoid stress and try to get enough sleep.

According to Nikulina, it is very important not only to eat healthy, but also to exclude certain foods.

- First of all, you should exclude foods containing histamine. The most common are tomatoes, eggplants, peppers and fermented cheese. You should also avoid eating foods that have been stored for a long time (for example, canned goods or pasta that has been in the cupboard for a long time). Avoid foods rich in preservatives and soy.

It also helps to avoid other common histamine allergens and increase histamine production, such as dairy, peanuts, and gluten-containing foods. Fish, citrus fruits, and chocolate increase histamine production. If pollen allergies occur in the spring, they can affect apples, pears, and even carrots in the fall.

- It is interesting that nettle contains mild histamine and at the same time suppresses excessive histamine production in the body. Therefore, nettle is useful to add to soups and salads even in dried form," advises Irina Nikulina.

It is also worth reducing or eliminating the consumption of caffeine, alcohol and salt during the allergy period.

- There are always mites in the apartment, but their number varies. In the fall, they enter an active reproductive phase. People suffering from asthma are most sensitive to dust mites, says therapist Nikulina. - Therefore, first of all, in the fall it is important to vacuum furniture more often, do wet cleaning and change linen.

* Choose your pillow and mattress wisely – synthetic. Spring mattresses are much more comfortable for mites. If you start sneezing often, you may want to replace your feather pillow.
