Gozman's wife placed under house arrest in valuables smuggling case

According to the lawyer, the case against Gozman's wife concerns kitchenware and household items that Gozman's mother gave to her granddaughter living in Germany. They were confiscated. RT reported that there was an attempt to smuggle valuables to Italy for Gozman.

Marina Egorova, the wife of opposition politician Leonid Gozman (recognized as a foreign agent by the Justice Ministry), has been placed under house arrest in a smuggling case, her lawyer Mikhail Biryukov told RBK. Information about the preventive measures can also be found in the case materials on the Mossud website.

"Marina Egorova was detained in Moscow on October 3. She came to Russia from abroad in August last year to give lectures to students," the lawyer said.

He said that the Lefortovo Court placed Egorova under house arrest after searches were conducted in the couple's Moscow apartment and dacha. The Investigative Committee opened a smuggling case against her on September 27, 2024, and she has visited Russia several times in the past two years, Biryukov said.

According to him, a driver who was transporting "kitchen and household items" to Germany via Estonia last summer was detained. The items were confiscated and the driver was released. "These items were handed over from Leonid Gozman's mother to her daughter, who lives in Berlin," the lawyer said.

RT, citing sources, claims that Egorova tried to take "many valuables and antiques" to Italy, where Gozman lives, the channel reports. According to RT, the politician's family has a residence permit in Italy, and he lives in a villa purchased several years ago. There are several suspects in this case.

Punishment for smuggling cultural property is provided for by Article. Part 3 of Article 226.1 of the Criminal Code refers to crimes committed by organized groups (according to RT, Egorova is accused of such crimes). The maximum penalty is 12 years of imprisonment.

RBC contacted Leonid Gozman and the Investigative Committee for comment.

The case file states that the court issued a ruling against Egorova on October 4, and it came into effect on October 8. On October 6, Gozman announced on his Telegram channel that he had decided to curtail his "social, political and journalistic activities" due to "personal circumstances," but declined to elaborate.

In July last year, the court sentenced Gozman to 8 years and 6 months in a general regime penal colony on a fictitious case against a military man (paragraph 2, paragraph "d" of Article 207.3 of the Criminal Code). The politician left Russia in 2022 after being placed under administrative arrest for 15 days for publicly identifying the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany. He flew to Israel. That same year, a criminal case was opened against him for failure to notify of dual citizenship due to an Israeli passport. The counterfeit case was opened last year.
