"Design Weekend" in Kaliningrad: a meeting of those who make the best visuals in the country

"DV" is the latest knowledge in the field of design, shared by the best designers of the country. It is an event, not an agency. Let's be honest, not everyone likes party meetings. Design Weekend is first and foremost a community. In essence, it is a non-profit project. There is no entrance fee or instructor fee. The atmosphere is as democratic as possible. "Design Weekend" attracts so many opinion leaders, design experts and the general public that they spread the word about the event. It does not need advertising. That is why it is difficult to find such a number of designers per square meter anywhere else. These are web and graphic designers, UX/UI, marketers, programmers and advertisers. These people are mainly young, bright and active.

Ya. Oh. Anastasia Golubykh, Minister of Digital Technologies and Communications of the Kaliningrad Region: “Of course, synergy is born at such conferences, new projects and ideas appear. We were asked to hold this event at the KODEWaves festival in May, and we are very happy to have the opportunity to hold it today.” Design Weekend is a large local event where all topics related to design are discussed in a broad sense. This includes industrial design, environmental design, graphics and digital technologies. It was the latter that was emphasized by the conference organizers.

If you open the speech program, you can see a pattern. Two streams, two halls, one way or another, the speakers will touch on digital design issues (web, mobile applications, digital products and services) and talk about how products are created, we will talk about what mistakes happen, how to avoid them, and also about innovations in the workplace. And you feel special thoughts from each speaker: "Guys, everything is possible. You will succeed."

"We want to show that all these design stars are actually ordinary people, very ordinary people, with the same problems as you. But thanks to talent and hard work, they have achieved something. Now they tell us how they got there and how we helped them motivate and advise them." Four of the reports presented at this conference are related to AI. Yes. Neural networks are a trend. But when asked "Do you use neural networks in your work?" less than half the audience raised their hands. It is not surprising that these topics are especially relevant for DV and aroused great interest. The real consolidation of this interest occurred the next day at the master class.

“I’m glad that there are fewer topics about food at DV today than there used to be. I like this decline. Because now there are a lot of lectures on semantics, fonts, ideas, processes, agency structures and how studios work. It’s great. And in Kaliningrad, I discovered this strange thing. Here, young people ask very mature questions. They dig very deep. They are interested in the process, how everything works. I always dreamed of this, so that young people could see far and be inspired. And today it happened. “I really like it.”

The first day ended with an open and very lively discussion with speakers who spoke on the topic of "Creativity vs. Metrics". On the second day of Design Weekend in Kaliningrad, a series of master classes and competitions on website assembly took place. Each MK had a unique story that cannot be answered with banal cards or other advice. The human factor is important here.
