Russia Wants to Ban SpeedTest Service Due to Cyber Risks

The plan proposed by the International Academy of Telecommunications (IAC) has already received support in the State Duma and the FSB, Izvestia writes.

MAC experts are concerned that data collected by Ookla, which owns SpeedTest, could be used by foreign intelligence agencies to carry out cyberattacks.

IAS President Anastasia Ositis expressed concern that the Americans, using SpeedTest, have created a global telecommunications network monitoring system that could be used as a tool for cyberattacks.

IPN academician Sergey Melnik emphasized that data collected from the network could fall into the hands of special services and be used for DDoS attacks. Experts suggest that operators remove Ookla software from their systems and switch to Russian-language analogues, such as Linkmeter.

Representatives of Russian operators interviewed by Izvestia noted that SpeedTest is the most popular service in Russia, but there are other services both within the country and abroad. An example is the TelecomDaily Megabitus service, or QMS, of the Rostelecom company.

According to experts, the ban on SpeedTest could be implemented without any problems for users, since alternative solutions are already on the market.

As the Vzglyad newspaper writes, the Discord messenger was blocked in Russia for violating the necessary legal requirements to prevent its use for terrorist and extremist purposes.

In addition, the cloud service for creating websites Wix has restricted access to its service for Russians since September 12, regardless of whether the account is paid or free.
